Né en 1969 à Fribourg (Suisse), Peter Aerschmann vit et travaille à Berne (Suisse). Il a tout d’abord suivi une formation entre 1991 et 1992 à la Hochschule fur Gestaltung und Kunst à Bâle, puis dès 1994 et ceci jusqu’en 1999, il a poursuivi ses études à la Hochschule der Künste à Berne.

Peter Aerschmann se consacre activement à la création de vidéos et d’installations interactives. Déroutant, son univers convoque des éléments de toutes parts, qui isolés, demandent à notre mémoire de faire un travail visuel inhabituel. Eclatée, la perspective disparaît du travail du vidéaste suisse dont la démarche vise à restructurer notre univers mental en faisant appel à des éléments connus mais entièrement décontextualisés. Muettes, les vidéos de Peter Aerschmann offrent à l’écran une dimension nouvelle : une chorégraphie visuelle s’offre au spectateur dont la perception est plus que bouleversée.

Peter Aerschmann is a Swiss artist, born in Fribourg (1969), who lives and works in Berne. After studying for two years at the University of Art and Design in Basle (1991-1992, he completed his training at the University of Arts (BUA) in Berne (1994-1999).

Since 1999 he has been active in the field of photography/video and interactive installations. From the Chinese worker to the veiled woman via the construction worker and the hooded policeman, he convenes elements from all over in his interactive and disconcerting universe – elements that on their own require an unusual visual effort. Perspective no longer has a place in his videos which e.g. in “Eyes” confront veiled women with hooded policemen where only their eyes are visible. His approach aims to restructure our mental universe by convening known elements that are, however, completely out of context. Peter Aerschmann’s videos are silent, but project a new dimension – a visual choreography is offered to the spectator whose perception is more than overwhelmed.

Peter Aerschmann, a key player in the art of video, has been able to benefit from several residences in Europe, Africa and the United States. In 2002, he was the “Swiss Award” prizewinner. He has exhibited his work all over the world, including the “Berlinische Galerie-Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst” and the “Maison européenne de la photographie de Paris (2008), the “Multimedia Art Musem, Moscow” and the “Musée d’art moderne de Luxembourg” (2009), the National Art Museum in Beijing (2010) and the Beirut Exhibition Center in Lebanon in 2015. In 2014, he also exposed his work at the “Centre PasquArt” in Bienne within the framework of the “Cantonale Berne-Jura”. His videos form part of prestigious collections such as those of the “Fondation François Pinault”, the “Palazzo Grassi”, Venise and the Marguilles Collection in Miami.
